My Bout of Books 5.0 Journey

Welcome to my Bout of Books 5.0 round-up post!

I was unable to make separate posts for each day of the challenge, and whatever eventful (and otherwise) things I did and read the past week, they’re provided way below, in color.  In sum, I:

  • read five books
  • leafed through 1,095 pages
  • participated in one Twitter chat session
  • joined one challenge
  • commented on more or less ten blogs

I know I could have done more but with an 8-5 job and other activities getting in the way, it was hard.  However, it’s precisely what makes me proud to have made it through the challenge until its end.  Plus 5 books in one week is a feat for me, considering how slooooowly I read, which surprises many of my non-bookish friends because many of them think terrible book hoarder = speedy reader! 🙂

Anyway, I would gladly join another read-a-thon soon, arming myself with a few lessons I picked up along the way.  Among them:

  • try to alternate e-books with physical books
  • switch genres whenever possible after each read (been reading young adult/coming of age the past five days, so switching to contemporary romance made me read faster because it’s a breather)
  • read whenever you feel like it
  • do not read when you feel like it’s becoming an obligation because you signed for a read-a-thon
  • a way to take a break without moving out of the read-a-thon zone is to visit and comment (or simply lurk) on fellow participants’ blogs
  • join challenges graciously hosted by fellow participants; your next book might come from a stroke of good luck in rafflecopter! 😉
  • do not hesitate to veer away from your pledged to-read pile
  • HAVE FUN.

To everyone at Bout of Books 5.0, I would like to thank the organizers and the daily challenge hosts, and extend my congratulations to all the brave participants and the yet-unnamed grand prize winner!  Hope to catch you all again whenever 6.0 may be.  Or see you in other read-a-thons around the corner.  It’s been a fun experience. 🙂

This is my Bout of Books 5.0 sticky post for the week!  My time zone is GMT+8 so my updates come a bit earlier than most. 🙂

I pledged to read 10 children/young adult books within the read-a-thon period.  I hope I could make it.  I also checked the Twitter chat schedule, and it seems I may be able to participate in, at most, two.  One happens at 9 am on Wednesday, my time, and the last, 11 pm on Saturday.  Hope to catch my fellow read-a-thon participants when I drop by even for a short time.

Monday, August 13

Number of books I’ve read today: almost 1! 🙂
Total number of books I’ve read: see above 🙂
Pages read today / Total number of pages read in all: 102
Books: Are You There, God?  It’s Me, Margaret.

My first day of BoB 5.0 was not what I planned.  However, I was with my football friends whom I haven’t seen in months so the catching up took longer than planned, and I didn’t regret it.  I will make it up tomorrow! 🙂

Tuesday, August 14

Number of books I’ve read today: 2
Total number of books I’ve read: 2
Pages read today / Total number of pages read in all: 44 + 149 / 295
Books: Are you There, God?  It’s Me, Margaret.  /  Fudge-a-Mania

I finally breezed through my BoB Day One book and finished one more!  I had to credit my rather long wait for my cardiologist at the clinic.  Things were still busy at work so I was grateful for that chunk of reading time.  I know I only managed to finish very thin and easy reads but hey, it’s better than nothing!  Plus they are considered classics in their own right, and genre, so it’s great to read their kind, inch by inch.

Wednesday, August 15

Number of books I’ve read today: 1
Total number of books I’ve read: 3
Pages read today / Total number of pages read in all: 163 / 458
Books: The View From Saturday

My busiest day of the week so far because of increased work volume and meetings one after the other!  That’s why I’m relieved to grab a breather while waiting for the attendees in my last meeting of the day.  It kind of moved my official time off work much later but I didn’t mind because I got to read.  Anyway, TVFS is way more than I expected.  It’s very insightful for a pre-teen read.  I highly recommend it.

My only tiny regret though was not being able to join the second Twitter chat.  It was at 9 am earlier and at that time I was stuck finishing a complicated case at work.  Still hoping to join the last session on Saturday.  Will definitely make time.

Thursday, August 16

Number of books I’ve read today: 0.5
Total number of books I’ve read: 3.5
Pages read today / Total number of pages read in all: 85 / 543
Books: Tiger Eyes

Same old long and busy day at work.  I managed to squeeze some reading time over yogurt before going home.  I wanted to stay longer but I had other errands so I cut it short.  My only consolation today is that one more day until a four-day weekend which assures me increased reading time as well.  And sleeping time, too. Haha.

Friday, August 17

Number of books I’ve read today: 0.5
Total number of books I’ve read: 4
Pages read today / Total number of pages read in all: 133 / 676
Books: Tiger Eyes

Saturday, August 18

Number of books I’ve read today: 0
Total number of books I’ve read: 4
Pages read today / Total number of pages read in all: 18 / 694
Books: starting to read Fog, the first book in the Losing Christina trilogy

For a weekend, I was unable to read more books that planned. However, I spent most of my day attending bookish events, so no regrets. I attended the second Filipino Reader Convention. I plan to make a separate post about it but in a nutshell, it’s been an insightful day listening to local librarians discuss the readership climate in the country, authors discussing their favorite reads, discovering school reading programs that work, and simply rubbing elbows with fellow book lovers and my favorite book bloggers. After the day-long event, I attended this month’s book session with my book club, and we plotted our schedule for next month’s Manila International Book Fair! Before heading home, I dropped by National Bookstore, and got home with awesome books for 70 pesos each (or about $1.50 a pop).

I have an hour before Saturday officially ends in my side of the world but I won’t be reading, probably. As I type this, I’m alternately participating in the 3rd and last Twitter chat session of BoB. 🙂

Sunday, August 19

Number of books I’ve read today: 1
Total number of books I’ve read: 5
Pages read today / Total number of pages read: 401 / 1,095
Books: What I Did For Love by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

1 pm: Ten hours to go until BoB is officially over in my time zone.  I haven’t started reading and when I do, it might be a book that is not in my original to-read list.  Anyway, I’m poised to head outside for errands but I’ve visited a few participant blogs, and excitedly joined the giveaway over at Kelsey’s Cluttered Bookshelf!

11:55 pm: I just got home and am happy to have breezed through a contemporary romance novel over coffee (I overstayed again, thanks, Starbucks Greenbelt 1, LOL).  The book I read isn’t part of my BoB pile; it’s not even the one I pertained to early in the day, but I stumbled upon it on NBS for P70 ($1.50)…and there you go. 🙂

  1. You did great! I love your ‘Lessons Learned.’ Mostly because they are so true. I think some of us did them subconsciously. I know that I mix up genres and alternate between ebooks and physical books but that’s mostly because I tend to read more than one book at a time. So glad you had a great week!

    • Thanks, Pepca! Yeah, it’s counterproductive if we do that ‘no? Although sometimes we can’t help it. Bottomline is, we always have to enjoy it. 🙂 See you around.

  2. Wow you’ve red more than 1000 pages that is awesome i’m impressed 😀 ! Congrats !
I remember you from the twitter chat on saturday? You’re from the Philippines right? I’m the one from France :).
I hope to see you at 6.0 :).

  3. Excellent Bout of Books! 5 books and 1095 pages is >200 pages per book. Awesome race to the finish line with 400 pages read on the last day. See you at Bout of Books 6.0!
